50 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE

Finn Apostol in the long and triple jump, Will Murfitt in the discus and shot, and Freddie Hobday in the 100m, 200m, high and long jumps. Girls’ Athletics The early conclusion of IB exams and later start to the girls’ season meant that captain Zoe Forbes and vice-captain Amelie Johnstone had both sadly departed before the season really got going. The Girls’ 1st Team, therefore, had an entirely new team this year and it was great to see so many new pupils in the Lower Sixth opting for athletics, as well as pupils in the Shell and Fourth Form being able to choose it too. In the first meet of their season at Abingdon all teams achieved 2nd place overall. Florence Spackman and Nina Brown both won their respective Senior and Inter 800m and 1500m races, Annabel Todd won the Inter 300m and Ciarra Davies was 2nd in the Senior 100m and javelin. In the Junior team Isla Martin and Saffron Day were 1st and 2nd in the javelin and shot, Molly Williams won her 300m race and Poppy Elkins ran a strong 200m to finish in 2nd place. The girls then competed in a series of fixtures at Marlborough against a small number of different schools each time. In the Nitro Event the Senior Girls finished in 2nd place overall with Hero Forshaw achieving the longest throw in the javelin, and the

their four competitor schools. Imogen Shaw was 1st in the 800m and high jump, Violet Amies 1st in the long jump and 2nd in the 100m, 200m and hurdles, Isla Martin won the shot and javelin, and Molly Williams was 2nd in the 300m. With strength in depth, in the B string Poppy Elkins placed in the 100m and 200m, and Louisa Bailey in the 800m. In the second Marlborough Invitational and final fixture of the season, the Junior Girls finished their season in 3rd place overall. Individually Violet Amies had another successful meet coming 1st in the high jump and 2nd in the 200m, hurdles and long jump. Isla Martin who has consistently thrown well was placed in the discus, javelin and shot put. In the B string events Imy Shaw won the high jump and hurdles, and was 2nd in the 100m and discus, an impressive display of multi-eventing. The overall Girls’ Performance of the Season was awarded to Isla Martin. In winning the shot at Marlborough and coming 2nd in the discus, she impressively broke both Junior Girls’ School records, throwing distances of 7.60m and 19.76m respectively. Her new personal bests bettered Jemima D’Arcy’s 2019 shot put record and Hattie Hipwell’s 2011 discus record; a huge well done to Isla in not only succeeding in these events all term, but also breaking two records. From medals to placings, school records to personal bests, the 2022 season was one of the best for the Athletics Club. Our athletes performed incredibly well, competing and training to their absolute maximum each time they stepped out in the Teddies vest. In track and field there will be fast days, and there will be slow days. The most important thing to remember when the times and distances are not quite what you hoped for is not to get too stressed or to try to force anything, to relax and do what you have trained to do. The Teddies athletes did this, changing their technique and improving their speed, strength and stamina little by little throughout the term. Congratulations to all our athletes on a very successful season and special mention to William Barlow, Freddie Walton, Elombe Case and Dylan Jones on achieving their 1st Team Athletics Colours. Finally, good luck to all last year’s Upper Sixth athletes in their continued efforts to achieve their personal best.
