SE CHRONICLE 684
49 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE
Season came from Walt Moore and Charlie Jones, who both broke longstanding Inter Boys’ School records. At Radley Walt broke the 400m record, setting a new and very impressive time of 53.34s, beating the previous record of 54.2s which was jointly held by Felix Burton (2008) and Richard Lane (1987) – Mr Livingstone remembers him setting this! Charlie continued his training and racing following the completion of his GCSEs, and by doing so went on to break two incredible records, both set by Ed Womersley in 2005. In the 1500m Charlie bettered Ed’s record by 2 seconds, setting a new School record of 4:08 min. Charlie took huge chunks off his 1500m personal best each time he raced, going from 4:34 min at Harrow in the first meet to his record 4:08 min at Wormwood Scrubs Open Event. Two weeks later Charlie went on to set a new School 3000m record of 9.02 min at the Aldershot Open, again bettering Ed’s record by 2 seconds. Huge well done to Charlie! With athletics now open to the Shells, we put out our first Junior Boys’ team last term. Small in number, but mighty in performances, the five-man team have become multi-eventing athletes through the coaching of Mr Livingstone and Miss Ronan. Individually, Theo Balzano dominated the Junior 400m events, winning his races at both Harrow and Marlborough, as well as placing in the high and long jumps. Each of the other boys also placed in these meets: Tom Sears in the hurdles and high jump,
Dylan Jones
6th place at Harrow. Undoubtedly though, their finest achievement, and the third nomination for the Boys’ Performance of the Season, was the silver medal they won in the 4x200m at the Achilles Relays where the squad of Jack Wood, Charlie Ferrett, Asa Greenwood, Toby Barlow and Seb Williams won their heat and, in the final, held off Harrow to win silver behind St Paul’s. Individually, the fourth and fifth nominations for Boys’ Performance of the
Elombe Case and Dylan Jones, who jumped, threw and ran in multiple disciplines each time, placing in their events and contributing valuable points to the team total. So many impressive results on each occasion and not enough space to mention them all, so instead two nominations for our Boys’ Performance of the Season award. Firstly, the two 100m races at Marlborough in which Freddie won an incredibly exciting race, on the line, in 11.0 secs, 0.1secs outside of the school record, and Hamza Ali was 2nd in an incredibly quick B string race, also on the line, in 11.6 secs. The second nomination (and ultimate winner of the award), was the team’s 4-minute relay at the Marlborough Nitro, a gruelling continuous sprint relay. The team of Freddie and Hamza along with Jackson Davies and Zac Adeboye, perfected their changeovers and got their tactics spot on, finishing over half a lap ahead of the field. The Inter Boys’ team also excelled last season and, with the Fourth Form able to opt for athletics once more, there was strength in depth, especially important after the Fifth Form completed their exams. Their team achievements were as follows: gold medal at the Marlborough Nitro Event; silver medal in the medley at the Radley Relays, bronze medal at the Radley Multi Events, 1st place at Abingdon, 3rd and then 4th place at the Marlborough Invitational,
Charlie Ferrett, Charlie Jones, Toby Barlow, Jack Wood, Freddie Walton, Hamza Ali, William Barlow and Zac Adeboye with their medals at the Radley Relays
