Born 1893 in Great Yarmouth, the oldest of three SES brothers, the sons of a clergyman. He was at the School a long while without much being recorded, although he won his 2nd XV Rugby Football colours and was a member of the VIth Form on leaving. He went up to Wadham College, Oxford in October 1913, his studies being interrupted by The Great War. He was commissioned in the 7th Battalion, The Norfolk Regiment in August 1914, and was in France by June 1915; slightly wounded later in that year and promoted to Lieutenant in January 1916. In July 1916 during the Somme Offensive, he was hit by a shell while in his trench and carried back by four of his comrades, knee deep in mud, until they were exhausted. By this time Green had passed away, anyway, of his wounds.
