Buried Neath, Wales Remembered St. Edward’s School Cloisters Stone Memorial
Born 1856 in Neath, South Wales, he was at the School a very short time, joining at 16 years of age. He was a member of the Cricket XI and the Rugby Football XV in 1872, the first year St. Edward’s was at Summertown. He was in the Vth Form (Upper School) when he left. He came from a wealthy family and eventually took over as the owner/manager of the Eaglebrush Ironworks in Neath. He was also a Justice of the Peace for Glamorgan and a Deputy Lieutenant. He married in 1882. During this time he was a Lieutenant Colonel in command of the Glamorgan Volunteer Artillery and was awarded the Volunteer Decoration. Shortly before The Great War he was appointed Colonel in Command of the 1st Howitzer Brigade, Territorial Force. Briefly retired, he rejoined the regiment in 1914 and was actively involved until a fall from his horse shook him severely, necessitating his early retirement from military life. Despite being badly incapacitated, he continued his territorial work. He died suddenly at his home in Neath, due to his injuries September 1917. His only son, Cyril (also OSE) was wounded in, but survived, the war.
