Born Egypt 1917, the younger of two SES brothers, from an Inverness family. A Lance Corporal in the OTC, he was in the V(c) Form on leaving. In 1939 he enlisted in the 1st Battalion, The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders and the next year was posted to France as part of the BEF contingent. He was killed in action in mid May during the retreat on Dunkirk at the Battle of Escaut, during a fierce rear-guard action thought to have been the last chance to stem the German ‘Blitzkrieg’ (it failed).
