Born Guildford, Surrey 1920. He was a House Prefect, a Sergeant in the OTC and in the History VIth Form. ‘He came when he was only twelve, a rather shy little boy who loved his home and felt rather fearful at the prospect of such large surroundings. Before he left he was a member of the VIth Form, had taken the Higher Certificate and was a House Prefect’ (Chronicle). In 1938 he went up to Exeter College, Oxford where he stayed until 1940, when the war cut short his studies. Before joining up he was able to take a War Degree, which he passed. In 1940 he joined an Officer Cadet Training Unit, and a year later joined the Royal West Kent Regiment as a Private, but soon after was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the same regiment. In 1941 he transferred to the 1st Battalion South Wales Borderers with whom he moved first to near Tobruk then a 100 mile overland trek to Iraq to reinforce the 8th Army. It was there that he died of his wounds following an accidental explosion, which has never been clearly explained, despite intense research.
