Buried No Known Grave Remembered The St. Edward’s School WW2 Memorial

Born in Sevenoaks, Kent 1918, the son of a clergyman, he became a School Prefect and won both his 2nd Rugby Football XV and Cricket XI Colours, Choir, Sergeant OTC, Librarian and in the History VIth Form. After leaving the School he qualified as an articled solicitor. Commissioned in the East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) as a Second Lieutenant in 1939, promoted to Lieutenant in 1942 and Captain in the 4th Battalion by 1943. His regiment was moved to the Middle East in 1943. He fought throughout the Western Desert Campaign. While crossing from Alexandria to the Island of Kos, the ship he was hit a mine east of the Island of Kalymnos, broke in two and sank in three minutes. All 200 ‘Buffs’ together with 135 crew and others were lost. ‘He was a very competent leader and gave great service to his House and the School and everything he did was marked by a cheerful and marked efficiency. He made friends amongst the boys and masters’ (Chronicle).
