Born in Reigate, Surrey 1920, he was ‘an athlete, solid and gentleman; a boy with the gift of firm friendships, then a man with abilities his modesty would always try and hide; a great fellow with a shy laugh, who was popular wherever he went’ (Chronicle). A member of the School Rugby Football XV 1936/7, Cricket XI 1937, Hockey XI 1937, Swimming Team, a House Prefect, L/Sgt OTC and in the Lower VIth History Form. After leaving he was a a Quantity Surveyor and on the outbreak of war he joined the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment as a Private in 1939 before going into an Officer Training Unit 1941. The same year he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers - a Captain by 1944. He was killed in action in September 1944 commanding the lead tank in the final assault on Boulogne. ‘As a leader, he was always sympathetic and helpful’ (His Padre).
