He left ‘too young to be distinguished for very much beyond high spirits (Chronicle)’. He was in the Middle IVth Form when he left. He departed for Canada to farm in 1914, but once war broke out he immediately returned to England with the Second Canadian Contingent. He joined the South Wales Borderers in 1916 and was wounded at Vimy Ridge in April 1916. He won the Croix de Guerre in October 1918 before going on attachment with the 116th Mahratta Light Infantry of the Indian Army, on attachment to the Gurkha Rifles. It was in their service that he was killed in action in Mesopotamia when at the rank of Acting Captain.
