Buried Amara War Cemetery Part II, Maysan, Iraq Remembered The Oakham School Chapel War Memorial, The St. Edward’s Cloisters Stone Memorial

Born 1884 in Netherfield, Sussex, the son of a clergyman, he was educated at Radley College and Pembroke College, Oxford. He was first an Assistant Master at Oakham School 1910-13, before moving onto St. Edward’s for one year where he taught the Vth Form. With the war breaking out he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 4th Reserve Battalion of The Devonshire Regiment, which was then posted to Madras in India. On arrival he was made up to Acting Captain, in command of an escort of 200 German prisoners, taken to Australia. He then returned to India where his Captain rank was made permanent with a regular battalion of the Gloucesters. He relinquished this command rank in October 1916 (reasons unknown). In February 1917 he was killed in action ‘leading his platoon near Kut in Iraq in a splendid manner and got as far as the third trench which was taken - his body was recovered two days later’ (his Colonel). ‘He was probably killed by the explosion of a shell as there was no mark on his body. He had a strong feeling that he was going to be killed’ (Chronicle).
