While at St. Edward’s he rowed in Rowing IV and VIII 1910/1911, and was in the Vth B Form. He went up to St. John’s College, Oxford in September 1911 and rowed for his College VIII. At some time after matriculating and The Great War he moved to India as when war broke out he enlisted in the 4th Battalion (Territorial) of the Devonshire Regiment in India in August 1914. He immediately became very ill with the ‘Quinces’ (a bacterial infection in the throat) which was the precursor of worse to come. From there on he was continuously unwell and while on a ship to Bombay, he had to sleep on deck as his temperature was so high. On arrival in Bombay he deteriorated fast, and died in the local Colaba Hospital within a few days of arrival. The final cause of death was given as Peritonitis. He was described as ‘an enthusiastic soldier and sportsman’ (The President at St. John’s College, Cambridge).
