Buried Ecoivres Military Cemetery, St. Eloi, Nord-De-Calais Remembered Christ Church, Cambridge War Memorial, The St. Edward’s School Chapel (Wooden Plaque) and the Cloisters Stone Memorial Born 1895 in Kent, the eldest son of a clergyman, he had a long career at St. Edward’s. He was a member of the Rugby Football XV 1911 and 1912 and the Cricket XI 1913 and also an athlete of merit. He was in the Shell Form. He went up to Christ’s College, Cambridge, winning various sports prizes and playing for his College Rugby Football XV. He was gazetted from the Cambridge Union OTC into the 5th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment in August 1914 in Luton as a Second Lieutenant. He was promoted to Lieutenant in Flanders, February 1915. The following month he returned home with enteric fever, which took him out of the action for seven months. Promoted to Captain in November 1915, he was the first English Officer into ‘Hell’s Kitchen’. A month later he left for Egypt but was almost immediately recalled to France in February 1916 and there it was he was killed in mid- March 1916. Standen had decided that so many of his men were getting hit from an unprotected angle which German machine-guns were trained on, that he went out into the open, reconnoitred the ground, returned and called for volunteers. A few minutes later a bullet entered his right lung and passed diagonally though him, perforating his liver. He dropped, smiling and cried “Well boys, jolly good luck to the 5th Lincolns”. They moved him under cover, he refused morphia and passed away in a quarter of an hour”. He had fought at Neuve Chappell, Hill 60 and most of the famous battlefields of the Western Front.
