Born 1897 in Finely, Warwickshire the only son of a clergyman. He was a member of the Rugby Football XV 1914 and was in the Upper IVth Form. Though not yet 18 years of age, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment in January 1916. He was in France ‘for some time’ with the 2nd/7th Battalion of his regiment and was Mentioned in Dispatches in January 1917 ‘after a good week as a Bombing Officer’ (Chronicle). He was killed in action at the end of February 1917 near Harbonniers in France. ‘He was hit by aerial torpedo while on his rounds to the bombing stores’ (Regimental diary). ‘He was one of my best young officers, whom I could ill afford to lose, so keen and good at his work’ (His Colonel).
