Born 1897 in Ellesmere Port, Salop, the youngest of two SES brothers, sons of a clergyman. Only at the School a short time, ‘He left the School before he had time to make his mark, but his bright and genial nature had already gained him many friends’ (Chronicle). He was in the VIth Form. For a short while he was employed in the offices of the Eastern Telegraph Company, London. He applied for a commission in October 1914 and joined the Inns Of Court OTC the day after war was declared. In May 1915 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 9th Battalion, King’s Shropshire Light Infantry and a month later was on the Western Front. Promoted to Lieutenant with the 5th Battalion in August 1915. He was ‘reported missing’ during the great attack on Loos in September 1915 at Bellewaarde Farm, then confirmed ‘killed in action’ shortly afterwards. ‘Lieutenant P.C. Owen was killed on the 25th September while gallantly leading his platoon in an attack on the German trenches. I beg to assure you of the sympathy of all ranks of this battalion who deplore the loss of a brave and efficient officer and a popular man’ (Commanding Officer).
