France Remembered Broadhembury War Memorial, Devon, The St. Edward’s School Chapel (Wooden Plaque) and The Cloisters Stone Memorial Born 1895 in Broadhembury, Devon, the youngest of two SES brothers, sons of a clergyman. While at the School he was a School Prefect, a Sacristan, a Corporal in the OTC, a member of the 2nd Rugby Football XV. He won the Junior Hugh Jump in 1911 and the Senior version in 1914. He was in the VIth Form. He joined the Oxford University OTC in December 1914, then tried several times to enlist but was rejected due to poor eyesight., however a year later was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal East Kent Regiment (the Buffs). He was slightly wounded in France in September 1916 and had to return to England to recuperate. In November 1916 he was transferred to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment and returned to France. Almost immediately he was ‘terribly wounded’ in the closing stages of the Somme Offensive, dying of his wounds in a field hospital the same day.
