Rhubarb October 2022

MARTYRS GOLF DENHAM GOLF CLUB 28th October 2021 T he Autumn Meeting was a true celebration of Martyrs Golf and a beautiful example of the ability of Sport, especially Golf, to bring different generations of OSE together! With 30 OSE in attendance (ranging from 1962 leavers to 2020 leavers!) plus two current members of the Common Room and former Head of History and Tilly’s Housemaster, Chris Danzinger, the turn-out was excellent, as was Denham. We got lucky with the weather too – some very light drizzle, but largely fine – which contributed to generally good scoring across the board and a number of players in contention to win the coveted Latham Bowl. The ‘Longest Drive’ was won by Alex Hargreaves (Field House 2008-2013), with the ‘Nearest the Pin’ on the 8th won by Jack Parry (Field House, 2018-2021).The ‘Kitchin Quaich’ (for the lowest scratch score) was, rather aptly, won by retiring

Martyrs Golf Rep Pete Neal (Corfe, 1993-1998) with 32 points (playing off 3), while the Latham Bowl (for the best Stapleford score) was won for the first time by DuncanWethey (Apsley, 1985-1990) with 36 points (playing off 20). We enjoyed a lengthy and exceptionally good carvery lunch, where we were joined

by Emily Rowbotham, the recently appointed Beyond Teddies Community Engagement Manager. Rodney Haig (Cowell’s, 1959-1964) delivered an excellent speech in memory of PatrickWebb (Segar’s, 1957-1962), a former Secretary of the Martyrs Golf Society and one of the Society’s most loyal supporters, who sadly died just a month earlier. Pete Neal then informed everyone of his decision to step down as Martyrs Golf Rep, to be succeeded by Ruairi Keeley (with the ongoing support of yours truly…!).A wonderful day and already a firm favourite of everyone who played.

Over one hundred of his friends from the golfing world attended to celebrate his memory and over £40,000 was raised for the Children’s Trust in Patrick’s name.
