Last year, Professor Sir Brian Greenwood retired after over 50 years working in infectious disease control, undertaking pioneering research, mentoring scientists and having an important impact on public health. and reminisced about their time at Teddies – old school pictures (the full school from 1956 and 1958) were viewed and names remembered (or at least guessed as memories have faded!). They recalled train journeys to and from South Wales at the start and end of terms, picking up others on stops from Swansea to Cardiff. Both Chris and Edward bought vacation homes in 1984 within 15 miles of each other in the Algarve and while Edward continues to visit the same “rural” property just east of Loule, Chris now lives permanently in the countryside just south of Loule. If there are other OSE living in or visiting the Algarve, both Edward and Chris would be keen to meet – and perhaps begin an ‘OSE in the Algarve’ group! Professor Greenwood’s work focused particularly on Africa, with perhaps his most enduring legacy being his research which has been critical in shaping malaria control in the modern world. In 1998 he co-founded the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Malaria Centre bringing together the largest number of malaria researchers, students and support staff in Europe. In 2012, Professor Greenwood was knighted for services to the control of malaria and other tropical diseases and in May this year he received the Director-General of the World Health Organisation's Award for Global Health, alongside Professor Awa Marie Coll-Seck. Professor Greenwood in 2021 leading a WHO team in China, confirming the country’s claim to have eliminated Malaria.
Peter got in touch to tell us that he had travelled to Australia and visited fellow OSE, Chris Drake (Field House, 1960-1965) and his wife Jannelle just outside of Sydney. Chris is an accomplished woodworker who

crafts beautiful pieces of furniture and musical instruments, and Peter told us that they had thoroughly enjoyed catching up, particularly on news of their children who are now living all across the globe. Peter was able to visit two of his children in Australia – his son, Nick, who now lives in Adelaide, and Tallula who is near Sydney.
