Galen Bartholomew (Sing’s, 1968-1972)

Andrew Anthony (Apsley, 1977-1982) Andrew is now Hotel Manager at Batty Langley’s in Spitalfields, London. OSE are most welcome in this vibrant East End location.The hotel is residents only and a haven of peace.

Galen has been researching the SS Suevic , a steamship wrecked off the Lizard Point in 1907, for about five years, after discovering that his great-grandmother and great-aunt were amongst 456 passengers and crew rescued by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution – this is still the largest number of lives saved by the RNLI in a single operation.

As part of the RNLI’s 200th anniversary celebrations and to support this worthy charity, Galen is halfway through giving 10 illustrated talks on the SS Suevic rescue and the RNLI in different parts of the country. He has also written a book about the rescue, which is due to be published later this year. Galen recorded an interview with the BBC about the rescue at the Lizard Lifeboat Station, which was broadcast on the day of the RNLI’s bicentenary. He discovered that the great grandfather of one of the other interviewees had been a crew member of one of the lifeboats during the 1907 rescue. Inspired by Mr Tree (Former Staff, 1965-1986) and Dr Peregrine, (Former Staff, 1959-1994) he now teaches Biology at a campus of the California State University in the San Francisco Bay Area.

James, who has competed in the Royal Ocean Racing Club ‘Caribbean 600’ on numerous occasions, raced this year with his Carkeek 45 InoNoir (GBR) – the boat’s race debut. InoNoir crossed the finish line on 22nd February, completing the 600-mile race around 11 Caribbean Islands. James was Commodore of the RORC until January 2024, and also competed with InoNoir in the Myth of Malham, Fastnet and Middle Sea Races last year.
