SPRING MEETING SANDY LODGE GOLF CLUB 4th April 2024 Report by Charlie Reid (Segar’s, 1973-1978) T he Martyrs spring meeting was held on 4th April at Sandy Lodge Golf Club which was in great condition considering the amount of rain in the preceding few weeks. Ten Martyrs were present playing for a host of prizes and the event was keenly contested by seasoned campaigners and new faces as well. Nearest the pin went to George Knee (Field House, 2017-2022) and longest drive to Charlie Reid. George Knee won the nett Stableford competition from Richard Gray (Tilly’s, 1986-1991) on count back and Robin Ellis (Segar’s, 1964-1969) won the scratch prize with Charlie Reid in second place. Robin received the Spring Cup and George the Wethey Salver. Also competing were Tom Redfern (Segar’s, 1960-1964), Stephen Matthews (Tilly’s, 1973-1978), Henry Narula (Cowell’s, 2009-2014), Padraig Mark (Tilly’s, 2009-2014), Harry Leitch (Apsley, 1999-2003) and Ben Way (Tilly’s, 1990-1995). SUMMER MEETING FRILFORD HEATH 14th June 2024 Report by Charlie Reid (Segar’s, 1973-1978) T he summer meeting was played at Frilford Heath on the Red course on Friday 14th June. With a very unpromising forecast, the attendance was good and it turned out there was only one heavy shower with plenty of sunshine and a strong breeze.The course was in great condition, fast running with the rough heavy and the greens very quick. Charlie Reid and Ali Zhagiparov.

The nett competition was won by Stephen Matthews (Tilly’s, 1973-1978) with 35 points and he received the St Edward’s Martyrs Graham (Segar’s, 2017-2022) and Nick Prior (Field House, 1990-1995) in 2nd place both with 31 points. Charlie Bradshaw (Corfe, 1989 1994) won the nearest the pin competition on the 11th hole but Silver Salver, withAngus
Charlie Reid and Stephen Matthews.
24 players took part including four pupils playing for the David Wethey Salver which was won by Ali Zhagiparov (Tilly’s, Fifth Form) with 41 points. In the Martyrs section the scratch prize was won by the evergreen Robin Ellis (Segar’s, 1964-1969),
missed the putt, however Nigel Lovett (Field House, 1959-1964), over on a trip from America, did manage the only 2 of the day on the 4th with a 40ft putt. Peter Hughes won the longest drive on the 15th, selected by the club, and the only hole directly into the strong wind! Thanks go to Peter Franks (Field House, 1989-1994) who managed to get a good number of players from his years at the School to join in.
