AUTUMN MEETING DENHAM GOLFCLUB October 2023 Report by Charlie Reid (Segar’s, 1973-1978)
MARTYRS
T he Martyrs golf meeting at Denham took place on Thursday 12th October on a greyish day but thankfully only with intermittent
showers. Everyone had an enjoyable game rounded off with the legendary Denham carvery lunch.
With a relatively small field the golf was competitive and some good scores were recorded. Nearest the pin came from debutant Rupert Shipperley (Kendall, 2006-2011) at the 16th with a shot to 2ft. The longest drive was by Sam Hunter (Segar’s, 2006-2010), another debutant, with a huge hit on the 7th requiring only a shortish iron to the stroke index 1 hole. The nett competition was won by Charles Searle (Tilly’s, 1969-1973) with 38 points, 2nd place was Charlie Reid with 35 and third was Richard Redfern (Corfe, 1990-1995) with 31. The scratch competition was won by Charlie Reid with 26 points after a count back with Charles Searle .
coming home and not really able to compete on level terms with a very powerful Wellington pair (off plus1 and plus3).Amazingly Wellington were beaten in the afternoon. It shows how the standard is improving year on year.We really need our best young talent if we are going to be competitive going forward. Unfortunately, Peter Hughes had to leave us on Friday afternoon which meant that I took his place on Saturday morning when we played a scratch Stableford for the Plate Salver. The top four teams then contested the semi-final and final on Sunday for another trophy. Sadly, we only managed to accumulate 77 points which left us in 18th place. We had fun though. It was a good experience and we are excited about our prospects in the future particularly if we can mobilise our young and talented OSE.
