Library Spotlight Reading with pride WEEK B
WEEK BEGINNING 02/06/25
Pride Month is celebrated internationally throughout the entirety of June. It has its roots in the Stonewall Uprising, which occurred in New York City in June 1969 . The uprising was a turning point in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, sparked by a series of protests against police harassment and discrimination. The following year, the first Pride marches were organized to commemorate the anniversary of the uprising. In the United Kingdom, the first official Pride march took place in London in 1972 . Books of the Week
Our Pride Month Books of the Week celebrate a wide range of LGBTQ+ experiences. Pageboy by Elliot Page is an intimate autobiographical exploration of the acclaimed actor’s gender transition, while footballer Megan Rapinoe’s autobiography One Life brilliantly mixes sport and personal reflection. In Simon James Green’s The Big Ask , a shy teen is shocked when he’s asked to prom by one of the popular boys; How It All Blew Up by Arvin Ahmadi is a coming-of-age story which sees Amir run away for adventure in Rome; finally, Virginia Woolf’s Orlando , published in 1928, remains one of the most daring and enlightening explorations of shifting attitudes towards gender ever written! The Library has plenty more LGBTQ+ themed books, both in fiction and non fiction, so come and have a browse or check out our online Time to Read booklet !
