Library Spotlight The great (summer) escape... WEEK B
WEEK BEGINNING 12/05/25
Going Places Display Our stairwell display is all about harnessing the power of wanderlust and celebrating books that make you want to get away! Some of our favourite summer reads are here: Love & Gelato and Anna and the French Kiss are sun-drenched stories about family and discovering who you really are. Great Circle , about a woman’s daring attempt to circumnavigate the globe, is an epic and uplifting story with an unforgettable protagonist. For the more philosophical, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is an enchanting modern classic that asks big questions about the world and our place in it. And you can’t get much more classic than Homer’s Odyssey , featured here in Emily Wilson’s stunning new translation. On the non-fictional side, we highly recommend Ernesto Guevara’s Motorcycle Diaries , a moving insight into 1950s Latin America seen through the eyes of the young man who would become a famous revolutionary. We also love Long Way Round , a modern odyssey that takes Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman from New York to Kazakhstan and beyond!
Book of the Week Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig
A beautiful and profound meditation on how we live, and how we might live better. Following a father and his young son on a summer motorcycle trip across America's Northwest, it is a story of love, fear, growth, discovery and acceptance. At once philosophical and personal, this is a book about values, relationships, and, eventually, enlightenment.
Staying with theme of mindfulness, the theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week (12 - 18 May) is “ Community ”. The theme highlights the importance of strong social connections and supportive communities for mental wellbeing. We have lots of books concerning mental health - including resilience and stress management - ready to borrow from the Library! th th
