Library Spotlight Bold beginnings and brilliant breakthroughs... WEEK B
WEEK BEGINNING 24/03/25
...it’s Women’s History Month!
With World Book Day and Wonderland taking centre stage in the Library this half term, we’re only getting round to Women’s History Month now! Combining with International Women’s Day on March 8th, Women’s History Month is an opportunity to rediscover the lives of influential women and commemorate key events, such as gaining the right to vote in 1918. In the Library this month, we are celebrating books that highlight women’s stories from across the world and emphasise the strength and resilience of women throughout history.
This week, we’ve picked two fiction and two non fiction books that reflect a wide range of women’s experiences and perspectives. Things a Bright Girl Can Do by Sally Nichols is a lively account of the suffragette movement, told through the eyes of three young women who join the fight for the vote. The story brings the voices and feeling of the movement into the present with relatable characters, weaving history, politics, friendship and love together for an immensely enjoyable read. The Girl With the Louding Voice by Abi Daré tells the story of a young Nigerian maid, Adunni, who, in spite of her circumstances, is determined to free herself through education. A hopeful novel and a compelling read, it offers a quiet but powerful look at resilience, inequality, and the importance of having a voice.
