WARDEN’S INTRODUCTION Welcome to the Autumn Term at St Edward’s. The start of the new academic year is an exciting time for all of us at Teddies, and especially for those new to the School this term. September is a time of opportunities and ambitions. It is also a time for making plans, and that is the purpose of this brochure about weekends at Teddies over the next three months. Friendship comes from shared experience, and the weekend programme plays an important part in that

process. There are outdoor activities in which to engage; there are concerts and cultural events to enjoy; there are opportunities to expand intellectual horizons; most importantly, there are many different ways in which to have fun and to make memories which will stay with you forever. The weekend programme is intended for families too, and I hope that it will bring parents and others to Oxford and into the School. It is for that reason that we have included a section on events and places of interest outside the School. I hope that you will all, parents and pupils, enjoy reading these pages and making plans for the new term, and that the programme which we have put together will allow you to pursue your passions, to find new interests, and to make wonderful memories. As always, we welcome your feedback. If there are ways in which you think we can expand the programme or events outside the School which you think we should include in the future, please do not hesitate to get in touch. This year’s Superstars challenge sees the Shell battling in their House teams to become Champions for 2023! They will face each other across an 11-event circuit including football penalties, golf, rowing, archery and skiing. Will they play their joker wisely to nudge ahead of the competition? The event will conclude with a hog roast and prize giving.

Over five weeks last winter, two of our teachers – twin brothers Arthur and Euan Friend – undertook a voyage of 3,000 miles,

Oxford, Reading and Cambridge. Jeff first visited Crete in 1964 and the strong Cretan sunlight was a revelation; visually the sun was in charge. This experience shaped his outlook back in Oxford, painting, drawing and etching in his studio, in the garden and around local street scenes. Jeff painted lights and darks – their patterns and forms, unceasing movements, implications, surprises, disguises, and heightened contrasts in both colour and tone. Free entry. The exhibition runs until 23rd September.

9TH SEPTEMBER At The North Wall Exhibition: Jeff Clarke Sunlight on Forms

This exhibition celebrates 60 years for Jeff Clarke as an artist in Oxford and is a chance to see his work which resides in the collections of the British Museum, Ashmolean Museum, and the universities of

rowing unassisted across the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Antigua, racing against 30 other teams from around the world and finishing in third place. More people have climbed Mount Everest than have rowed across the Atlantic, it is one of the most demanding endurance events on the planet. They rowed with their other

two brothers Jack and Hamish, also twins, and became the first four brothers and first two sets of twins to row an ocean. In this inspiring talk, they will detail their amazing experiences and how they came together as a team to overcome the immense mental, physical and logistical challenges of the race.

Bristol-based Felix released their debut single Leaving in the Spring followed by Hallelujah in June from their upcoming debut EP. Blending ethereal vocals with powerful indie rock arrangements, their anthems are fuelled with real life experiences that lie just below the surface of emotive lyrics. This is the first time the band have come back to the School to perform and we can’t wait to see them live. Not one to be missed! At The North Wall Brown Boys Swim 8.00pm Winner of a Fringe First and the 2022 BBC Popcorn Writing award, Brown Boys Swim returns to The North Wall, ahead of a national tour, following sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe and Soho Theatre! Fierce, funny, and brimming with heart, writer Karim Khan (an alumnus of The North Wall’s ArtsLab programme and their Creative Associate) examines the pressures faced by young Muslim men in this exhilarating play about fitting in and striking out. EVENTS FOR FAMILIES SATURDAY 7TH OCTOBER At The North Wall Exhibition: The Society of Wood Engravers The SWE returns to The North Wall this year to present a new selection of over 120 hugely diverse relief prints. The exhibition includes wood engravings, linocuts and woodcuts by some of the finest printmakers from this country and abroad. The prints in the exhibition are chosen by a jury of three engravers, who select from Society submissions and those aspiring to membership. This unique and inspiring exhibition has toured the UK and you can catch it in Oxford until 14th October. Free entry. folk musicians. Andy Cutting (button accordion), Sam Sweeney (fiddle) and Rob Harbron (concertina). Leveret’s music is not arranged in the conventional sense and the trio instead interact to create new settings of their repertoire, with no two performances alike. Leveret’s music is firmly rooted in traditional English folk, but their inventiveness keeps it fresh and new. A chance to see a band at the top of their game. Tickets £20. School Play Performance: A Christmas Carol 7.30pm–10.00pm The North Wall The perfect prelude to the season, this adaptation of Dickens’ classic ghost story sees our pupils on stage in The North Wall performing a cockle-warming, chestnut roasting, heart-melting slice of Christmas. In one of the most enduring festive tales of redemption and compassion, we are whisked away to Victorian England as miserly businessman Ebenezer Scrooge discovers the limitations of his life and beliefs, learning to pity himself and to love his neighbour – but is that enough? The exhibition In Progress 6 celebrates the fantastic work from pupils across all year groups, highlighting the breadth of work produced from the Shell, the Art Pathway and GCSE Ceramics, the IB and A Level. Pupils are encouraged to choose a theme on which to centre their work at the beginning of the year and teachers introduce pupils to a new technique fortnightly. This exhibition showcases the work produced to date, approximately half-way through the course. Free entry. The exhibition runs until 27th November.
