WARDEN’S INTRODUCTION

A particularly warm welcome to those of you joining us at Teddies for the first time. The Weekends at Teddies programme is a termly production, affording you a window into the innumerable activities on offer to pupils and their families each weekend at St Edward’s. It is a line-up of which I think we can be justly proud. A riveting mix of whole school and House activities, musical, dramatic and dance performances, sports, trips and the copious entertainments provided by our friends at The North Wall, among the multifarious wider opportunities, ensure there is no such thing as a typical Teddies weekend. As summer turns to autumn and on to winter, the return of crisp mornings deliver an assured keenness in step with the start of the new academic year. We begin again, renewed by the optimism of a summer’s rest, sustained through the weeks ahead by the anticipated vigours and

pleasures of an uplifting programme. I look forward to enjoying it with you. Stephen Jones

The iconic 1970s and ‘80s challenge television series gets a reboot and a rebrand in this hugely popular, sporting battle royale. Sing’s and Kendall are joined by the growing community of Cooper Lodge as they go toe-to-toe-to-toe across a challenging 10 event circuit! Lunches and refreshments will be provided for pupils and their families at the Martyrs Pavilion.

EVENTS FOR FAMILIES SATURDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER Sixth Form Open Morning 9.00am–1.30pm Apsley Fourth Form Parents’ Meeting 12.00–1.00pm Headline Act: Hackney Colliery Band 7.30–8.45pm The North Wall Widely touted as one of the best live acts in the UK, Hackney Colliery Band blend brass, reeds, percussion, jazz and electronics to create a sound that reinvents the traditional Brass Band for the 21st century to glorious effect. Touring in their tenth anniversary year, HCB has performed everywhere from the London Olympics’ Closing Ceremony to live sessions on BBC 2 and BBC Radio 2.

The Alternative Tuck Shop Tucked away just off the major city attractions on Broad Street is The Alternative Tuck Shop – or ‘ATS’ for those already initiated. The highly popular student eatery on the corner of Holywell Street and Mansfield Road provides what are, hands down, the best sandwiches in Oxford, alongside a tempting sweet treats selection. Don’t be put off by the best in town label, the prices haven’t gone up with the reputation! The Grand Café If you’re fancying something more luxuriant look no further than The Grand Café, the site of the country’s oldest coffee shop (dating from 1650) according to onetime regular, Samuel Pepys. Sitting amidst the marble pillars and gold-leaf with a range of coffees not to be missed, and something special to offer those chasing a nibble at lunch or high tea, The Grand Café has established itself as something of an Oxford institution.

The Oxford Lieder Festival Daily concerts from Friday 11th October The 18th Oxford Lieder Festival will explore life, death, and the mysterious areas between and beyond. The two-week-long festival is packed with concerts from some of the world’s most critically-acclaimed performers, including pianist Ivana Gavrić who is in concert on Sunday 13th October playing works by the masterful pianist-composer Clara Schumann, as well as works by Edvard Grieg and Cheryl Frances-Hoad.

The Ashmoleon Museum Feed the World: Food and Money in the 20th Century Exploring the complex relationship between food and money, this display in Gallery 7 at The Ashmolean Museum takes a closer look at the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s ‘Food for All’ programme. Learn how monetary and numismatic objects such as coins, banknotes, and tokens related to food in the 20th century, and why this was important.
