Rhubarb 2024
Stuart has fond memories of his time at St Edward’s. He said that he might be one of the few “double rejects”(Cook’s words, not Sparrow’s), having applied for first Cambridge, and then Oxford the following year, and not having been offered a place at either.). He remembers his House Master, the late Fred Pargeter, being incredibly supportive, kind and encouraging, writing to the two Oxbridge colleges he’d applied to, encouraging them to have a rethink. Stuart enjoyed being Head of House in his final year and along with Sixth Form friends enjoyed having a study with access to the Tilly’s rooftop where they could sunbathe lying on beanbags with a view of both the Quad and all the way out to Port Meadow. on IL-11 could be the holy grail for anti ageing. In a typical Teddies self-deprecating way Professor Cook says,‘I try not to get too excited, for the reasons you say, is it too good to be true? There’s lots of snake oil out there, so I try to stick to the data, and they are the strongest out there, but one needs to proceed carefully’. The quest for a longer life is woven through human history and perhaps Stuart’s research Stuart says he definitely thought it was worth trialling the drug in human ageing, declaring that, if it worked, the impact ‘would be transformative’. He is prepared to take it himself and is first in the queue. His old pal from Mac’s said he’d be delighted to be part of the trial too and asked whether he could have an investment flutter on it as he’d need to top up his pension if we were all going to live for 20 more years as a legacy of St Edward’s inspirational A-level science teaching!
