Trip to CERN Sixth Formers Fergus Flory and Vania Lay write: In November, Upper Sixth Physicists took a trip to Geneva where we visited the European Centre for Nuclear Research ( CERN ) which operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world.

over a large distance. We were also able to stop by the Place de jeux du parc des Bastions where many of us took part in intense games of giant chess and others enjoyed a scenic ice skating session. Overall, the trip was an inspiring and fun opportunity which gave us the chance to visit an internationally renowned research institution, where we learned a great deal about the Physics and Mechanics behind particle acceleration, as well as to explore the beautiful city of Geneva.

On the trip we also took one of the popular Mouettes across Lake Geneva where we saw the Jet d’Eau, and visited the History of Science Museum and many other landmarks of the city. The trip provided an insightful experience as we were able to look around one of the first particle accelerators in CERN and briefly visit ATLAS – one of the detectors which discovered the notorious Higgs boson particle. This was
