The Chronicle January 2020
39 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE
corner prowess and defensive composure. The U14B’s had a mixed season, often unable to produce a consistent level of hockey throughout the match. They have certainly made progress, however, and their peak achievement was beating Downe House 3-0, a performance to inspire them for next season. The U14C’s had a really encouraging season. They took a while warm up but consecutive wins against Pangbourne, Kimbolton and Wellington D’s bode well for the future.
The 15C’s had a good season, winning five out of nine matches. They always worked well as a team and their passing style earned them epic 3-2 and 2-1 wins against Wellington and Bradfield respectively. The U14A’s had a tough start to the season but by the end had really developed as a team. Highlights were certainly qualifying for the regional knockout round of the nationals and beating St Mary’s Ascot and Bloxham to end the season. Special mention to Phoebe West for her short
started with a 4-1 win against Kimbolton and, despite some tricky games against bigger schools, there was a great atmosphere throughout the term. The U16A’s had a great season this term, despite three of last year’s team playing in the 1st XI. They started the season with an unfortunate loss to Dean Close, but followed with an amazing match winning 7-2 against Cranford House, with some great play from Molly Spencer. Narrow losses to Marlborough and Bradfield followed but performances suggest that those results can be bettered this year. The start to the national round was excellent, winning against Portsmouth Grammar 11-0, followed by a narrow 2-1 loss to Wellington. In the following tier, they went to Great Marlow and despite less possession, showed clinical finishing skills and steely defence to win 2-1. Their quarter final against Cranleigh was abandoned with them 1-0 up and will be replayed this term. The U16B’s started the term off well, with a tough match against Dean Close, which was drawn. There were many triumphs this term, despite some testing matches; Saskia van der Heiden, Tabitha Emmott and Cecily Taylor deserve special mention. It was a great season for the U15A team. They won an incredible 12 out of 15 games, scoring 53 goals. Tough losses to Millfield and Marlborough provide targets for the future but the style of hockey they played won plaudits throughout the term. Coco Timms was immense at centre back with Alice Spencer being the top scorer in the Club by some margin. The most impressive win was arguably at Bradfield where they defied foul conditions and a physical opposition to win 1-0. The manner in which they won the county tournament was convincing, scoring 13 goals without conceding. They brought energy, purpose and humour to training, driven by Mr Craze, and there is no doubt more to come from this talented group. The season for the under 15B’s was not only rewarding and successful, but also good fun. With help from their coaches, Mr Waring and Miss Arbuthnot, they managed to win eight out of the 11 matches they played, scoring 30 goals. Some of their highlights this season were a 9-0 win against Pangbourne, a 1-0 win against Wellington, a 3-0 win against Stowe and a 4-0 win against Kimbolton. This showed a massive improvement on last season and I am certain we will see some of these players in the 1st XI in years to come.
