1958 - New Science Laboratories ( Peter Bosanquet design ) opened in May (May Chronicle) Large ‘relief sewer’ constructed in the Woodstock Road, in part passing through School grounds. The spoil involved used to enlarge the surrounds of the Outdoor swimming Bath Small Indoor Miniature Range (H.P. Little design) erected in the ‘Hollies Garden’ and first used in December. Built on the original 1917 range A Masters’ ‘Ablution Block’ added to Main Buildings opposite the Common Room Internal telephone system installed for the first time 53 Oakthorpe Road leased by the School for the accommodation of one married and one bachelor Master (General Purposes Meeting February 1958) Development Plan reviewed, including improvements to the deteriorating Pavilion and the provision to improve Corfe House. The planned extension to Big School should be deferred as a completely separate Assembly Hall might be built ‘in the end’. R. Bosanque t given the responsibility to investigate the Pavilion issues, the development of the Corfe House and area surrounding and to consider ‘the proposed buildings to the north of South Parade’ Third bay added to the Boathouse costing £380 (£12,388 today) (General Purposes Meeting, May 1958) Costs for effectively draining Lower 1 field could be very high and ‘a permanent solution of raising the ground might be more satisfactory in the long term’ (General Purposes Meeting May, 1958) Maintenance staff at the School convert a dormitory in Macnamara’s House into four studies as well as several small rooms into studies - all during the Summer holidays (Governors’ Meeting October, 1958) A hut behind Segar’s is completed as a new Games Room as well as an extra Day-Room (Governors’ Meeting October, 1958) Annexe to Segar’s House built (and extended in 1973) 1959 - A plaque, sculpted by Thomas Bayliss Huxley-Jones , placed on the outside wall of the new Science Block, near the entrance to the School. The inscription acknowledges the gift from the Advancement of Scientific Education in School two years earlier (May Chronicle). Cost of the plaque is £500 (£15, 850 today) (Governors’ Meeting, May 1958) John Vernon (Common Room) and his new wife move into 42 Oakthorpe Road (October Chronicle and Box 15) A new playing field planned to be laid on the old farm field, to be completed in September During the Summer Holidays the Senior Day-Rooms in Cowell’s and Segar’s converted into three studies each School acquires 50 Oakthorpe Road (Box 15) at a cost of £2,350 (£74,495 today); it will house Captain J. Butterworth (Common Room) and his family temporarily 32 Oakthorpe Road, formerly the abode of the P.T. Sergeant-Major and an unmarried Master, now taken over by a married Master (Mr. R.L. Arundel) and his family (Governors’ Meeting, February 1959)
