The Building of St Edward's School: A Chronology (1870 - 2020)

P AGE N O : 68 • Modifications to the current Heating Plant include installation of mixing valve to regulate the degree of central heating, replacement of circulating pumps and conversion to oil firing costing £5,100 (£189,210 today) With these changes the Architects feel that a class room in Big School can be made available; a room in Macnamara’s House will also be freed up relieving congestion in the Junior Day-Room and thus making the Corfe Day-Room available for Day Boys if required. Provision for more satisfactory private accommodation in Field House where a Reading Room and room for a few extra borders can be provided (General Purposes Meeting, May, 1955) The Pottery Room equipped with a wheel and small kiln (Governors’ Meeting February, 1955) The old School Bell Tower, a survivor from the earliest days on the roof of the Main Buildings, has become dangerous after gales in March. On the advice of architects that even with considerable renovation it would ‘always be a source of anxiety to the School’; the Chairman of Governors agrees for its removal (Governors’ Meeting, May 1955) In a detailed list made out by the School Archivist and former teacher Jack Tate he summarised all the building work completed at the School between 1946 and 1955 thus:- ‘Since the war, virtually all the kitchen equipment has been either rebuilt, renewed or added to and since the Winter Term of 1954 a new washing machine has been installed in the Pantry where further racking and planning is under consideration. In the class rooms additional desks have been provided and some of the older ones replaced. Most of the boilers have been either overhauled or renewed. Clothing cupboards have been provided in dormitories for suits and shelving added to the Dining Hall for boys’ jams etc. In the grounds, mowers and games equipment have been renewed and in the last two years (under a programme of the renewal of boats), 2 new IVs and 3 new VIIIs have been supplied The Governing Body has instructed the Warden to prepare a report on the further development of buildings of the School buildings. A Consultant Architect, R. Fielding Dodd and a Consulting Engineer Phillips Son & Norfolk have been appointed to assist in this ‘matter’ Southward extension to Segar’s House ( K.A. Stevens design ). 1956 - Under the guidance of ‘Bill’ Eardley (Common Room), the gardens surrounding the Outdoor Pool completely re-laid and replanted Indoor Swimming Pool is boarded over for the first time, so it can be used as a Gymnasium in the winter time, then reverting back to its original purpose in summer (April Chronicle) School offered (and accept) a donation of £17,500 (£621,250 today) from the Advancement of Scientific Education in Schools, towards extending the existing Science Block to allow for four new Science Laboratories (September Chronicle) Changing Room remodelled and re-equipped ( Keith Stevens design ) with new fittings and ‘a hard clean floor’. Fourteen tiled showers installed along the northern wall and a ‘Drying Room’. A cost of £4,196 (£148,958 today) is agreed for the ‘major’ part of the work Tables in Dining Hall treated with a heat resistant polished surface and some of the older ones replaced The Cricket Pavilion altered and redecorated - a new small room is installed at the southern part of the main room for the 1 st XI - the goal is to tidy up the whole building and keep it ‘clear of clothing’.
