The Building of St Edward's School: A Chronology (1870 - 2020)

P AGE N O : 114 The Performing Arts Centre ‘The North Wall’, opens in November, and within a year its architects Haworth Tompkins and the builders Benfield & Loxley win both Civic Trust and RIBA Awards (Oxley, 2015) The North Wall ‘radically adapted the Victorian Buildings on the northern boundary of the School, which had accommodated, at various times, the Indoor Bath, the Gymnasium, the Careers Department, the Laundry and the (infamous) lavatory block “The Crystal Palace” ’ (The original toilets for School Hose) (Oxley, 2015) The new Science Building cost projection is £3,300,000 (£6,666,000 today)(General Purposes, November 2006) Boathouse re-development (see below) completed in the autumn and will be officially opened next summer. 2007 - Building of the new Science Block under way, with completion estimated as September 2008. The new building will house six Biology Laboratories and two Sports Studies class rooms. Made possible by a benefactor (anonymous at this stage) and designed by Nick Hardy of TSH Architects (Summer 2007 Chronicle) Boat House extension completed and opened by Chris Adams (O.S.E.) in June. Building incorporates toilets, changing facilities and showers and also houses rowing machines, video analysis, a clubroom and permanent accommodation for boatman/coach (Autumn 2007 Chronicle) Between 2007 and 2010 Sing’s, Tilly’s, Macnamara’s and Oakthorpe Houses have been added to and refurbished First mention of members of the Society contributing towards a new Pavilion to replace the current building ‘in recognition of the School’s 150th Anniversary in 2013’. Two O.S.E. have already offered sizeable donations, with any shortfall being bridged by donations from other O.S.E. The 2007 Strategic proposals include plans to complete Phase 1 of the Science Building, refurbish the present Science Block, provide more adult accommodation in Boarding Houses, complete the Catering Project, improve Music facilities, refurbish the Chapel (General Purposes, September 2008) English Sinfonia request that it be based at the North Wall (General Purposes, September 2007). The Orchestra perform in the North Wall in October and plan a further three concerts later in the academic year John Pawson (parent and RIBA winner) will be approached with a view to designing the new Pavilion (General Purposes, September 2007). School decides to proceed with this on the basis that the existing 1930s model is demolished - if this proves impossible an alternative plan should be drawn up allowing the two buildings to be in the same vicinity (General Purposes, November 2007) Governors advised that there is a current application made to knock down the Lemon Tree Restaurant in the Woodstock Road and to build nine new dwellings in its place - as this abuts the School’s existing rifle range. St. Edward’s issues an objection with the Planners (General Purposes, September 2007) Planning application for the Lemon Tree site turned down but further applications may follow. The School needs to decide whether to make an offer now or wait until planning is obtained (General Purposes, November 2007) The Long Term Development Strategy this year includes Phase 2 of the Science Building (£3,000,000, £5,880,000 today), Music Teaching Space (£4,000,000, £7,840,000 today), Modern Languages space (£4,000,000, £7,840,000 today), new Cricket Pavilion (£800,000, £1,568,000 today), update and refurbish the Boathouse (£170,000, £333,200 today), Major restructuring of the New Hall (£4,000,000,
