OXFORD LIFE
THE MIGHTY ASHMO
Having the world’s oldest public museum on our doorstep is nothing to be sniffed at, especially when the range of temporary exhibitions is so endlessly illuminating and inspiring. Offerings this term include:
Jeff Koons Until 9th June
Dimensions: The Mathematics of Symmetry and Space Until 9th June A collaboration with the University’s Mathematical Institute, this exhibition explores what it means to move in one, two, three and more dimensions. Using stunning Islamic ceramics, prehistoric carvings and Renaissance prints alongside virtual reality technology, embark on a journey of discovery from ancient cultures into cutting-edge science. The Naked Form in Modern Chinese Art Available all term Not a traditional subject matter for Chinese art as we know it or think of it, the nude form became a more influential and common theme in modern Chinese art from the 1930s onwards. Explore a selection of artworks as they appear in Chinese modern art from the early to mid- twentieth century through to the present day.
A retrospective of the critically-dividing Jeff Koon’s work spanning his career from the 1980s to today, including 14 pieces which have never been on display in the UK. Koons’ work pushes the boundaries of contemporary art and has an ability to re-contextualise the known into something else, whilst encouraging the viewer towards self- reflectiveness – often quite literally, through the use of reflective surfaces. Leonardo da Vinci and National Identity on Medals and Money Available all term 500 years on from Leonardo da Vinci’s death this exhibition examines the interpretations of Leonardo as a representative of national identity by looking at the use of his image and work on commemorative medals and monies since the first was struck by Louis XIV’s mint 350 years ago.

FUELLING UP
Whilst Oxford’s culinary scene may not set every ardent foodie’s taste buds to tingling for want of the most refined or Michelin starred offerings, the diversity, quality and, indeed, quantity of the city’s eateries still has plenty to tantalise the palette:
The Folly Tucked along from the hustle and bustle of St Aldate’s, the High Street and the Westgate, and nestled against Folly Bridge, there floats the refined elegance of The Folly. Floats, because the dining experience comes with the opportunity of a 30 minute pre-dinner river cruise, returning to the riverside terrace to select from the three course a la carte menu – summer dining done like few others can.
No1 Ship Street A favoured spot for our friends from England Rugby, and with good reason: standard dining experience this is not. Since it took over the location from the old News Café, No1 Ship Street has been wowing customers with its sophisticated menu and understated, peaceful luxury, all at decidedly palatable prices.
Oxford Green Week Taking place after Half Term, from 8th–16th June, Oxford Green Week sees pop up events taking place across the city, all on a green, environmentally friendly theme. This year the inspiration comes from the One Planet Living project, a vision that seeks to create a world existing happily within the Earth’s resources. The events during the week bring together organisations and businesses that support an environmentally sustainable message, from electric cars to locally-sourced food stalls.
SOMETHING DIFFERENT
You’ve soaked up the art, been inspired by the academic prowess seemingly effusing from the very buildings, but what do you next? Why not explore:
