Chronicle Summer 2023

59 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE

going and gave their all. They won goal of the season against Bloxham with William Wang playing a long ball through the fog to Freddie Banks who was on the goal line to tap it in. The Junior As played 11 games on a strong circuit and won 10 of them, ranking equal 3rd best in the country for their results. This was a remarkable effort, with the team competing against dominant hockey schools who play for two terms. Winning close games became a habit with tight victories against Bradfield, Radley and Abingdon mixed in with more comprehensive ones against Bloxham, Stowe and Cheltenham. The Junior B boys had a great start to their Teddies hockey careers with lots of great moments throughout the season. It’s been impressive to see them come together as a team. Winning 5/10 games has allowed a lot of development and excitement leading into next year. Thank you to the Fourth Form pupils who played on some occasions. On top of the regular fixtures there has also been a lot of other activity on the astroturfs; the annual Hockey/Netball Festival, Junior House Hockey, Senior House Hockey and a mixed fixture against d’Overbroeck’s. Congratulations to Apsley coming on top in the juniors and Field who pipped Apsley to win the seniors. Unfortunately, St George’s 6’s got cancelled due to the weather but this will be a regular event in the Spring Term going forward. The season concluded with a Leavers vs Remainers game, finishing 2-2 after full time with the Leavers winning on flicks. The boys have committed to hockey across all three terms, and the hope is that this will continue to be the norm; during the Autumn Term numbers were extremely high which ultimately paid dividends when it came to the start of the season. The appetite for hockey has also continued through to the summer with boys out playing on Monday nights, no doubt a positive sign for the future. Everyone is set to work hard in preparation for next year’s season, starting off with a trip to Barcelona in January. Thank you so much to all the pupils and staff involved – it’s been a term of learning and fun. I truly hope all the Upper Sixth leavers will have fond memories of hockey at Teddies and want to play beyond school.
