56 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE

Tennis By Nic Bond, Director of Sport

The Tennis Club worked hard throughout the 2022 season with strong levels of participation which meant that competition for places was stiff through all year groups. The atmosphere was very good leading into the season, with a strong contingent arriving back at School ahead of term for pre-season training. Girls The girls’ squad, led by co-captain Molly Spencer, was kept in fine shape as the season progressed. The senior team had a tricky start to the term, but quickly turned it around v Rugby and went on to enjoy an impressive second half of term, losing only one game. Moving through the Lower School, the teams had varying levels of success with some gratifying highlights coming late in the term for the U14 and U15 teams. The girls were tenacious in the way that they played throughout the Club and it is a great sign of things to come. An excellent result for the U14s came in the final week of term when they took victory

vs a strong Marlborough opposition proving how far they had come since the beginning of the term. Boys The season kicked off with a full block v Stowe in which the senior boys’ 1st team

gave an outstanding performance to take a strong victory. The block fixture was equally successful through the Club with the Lower School also securing victories. The senior boys went on to be a very successful team over the year taking some impressive victories v Marlborough and Eton, among others. Noah Roussel led the way in this team as co-captain. Moving down the School the Club saw some great signs of things to come. Although not all teams were continuously successful there was a great sense of determination about boys’ tennis moving forward with fantastic grit and endeavour from the lower years. The Club As we moved through the season the Tennis Club developed greatly as performances improved over the term. The Club fielded very strong mixed teams who all enjoyed significant success against their competitors and the senior mixed team was unbeaten. Junior mixed teams also had great success taking a convincing victory against Rugby School and losing only marginally to Wellington College. The School was pleased to field so many mixed teams and will be looking to increase this number moving forward. As ever, sights are now set on preparation for the next competitive season.
