42 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE

A Fairytale Ending Entrepreneur and amateur jockey Sam Waley-Cohen OSE was in Field House from 1995-2000. We caught up with him after his sensational Grand National win on Noble Yeats earlier this year to talk about Teddies, racing and retirement.

Sam at Teddies

Did you enjoy your time at Teddies? I had a great time. I loved everything about it – the boarding, the hockey, the rugby. After Teddies I took a gap year and then

studied Politics at Edinburgh. What were the highlights?

The friendships first and foremost – we’ve just been on holiday with one of my friends from Teddies and his family. The Teddies ties endure. I was also part of the School’s only ever unbeaten hockey XI in 2000 – that was really special. How important was co-education to you? Teddies went fully co-ed when I was at the School and I always felt it was a really positive move – it prepares you more fully for the rest of your life. When did you first start thinking about becoming a jockey? I actually rode while I was at Teddies. My HM, Mr Boult, drove me to Warwick to ride in one of my first ever races. I was absolutely terrified! But I loved it and got a U16 British eventing team and started to compete more regularly and so opportunities came my way.
