The North Wall’s Brown Boys Swim wins big at the Edinburgh Fringe By Amy Walters, Programme and Marketing Manager at The North Wall

Tickets for Brown Boys Swim at The North Wall this September have now sold out, but the show can also be seen at Soho Theatre in London from 26 September – 15 October. Book tickets via sohotheatre.com

The North Wall’s latest home-grown production made its debut at the Edinburgh Fringe festival this summer. As well as playing to sell-out crowds, Brown Boys Swim picked up an esteemed Scotsman Fringe First award and the BBC Popcorn Award for Best New Play. The play is a lyrical coming-of-age tale written by Karim Khan (recipient of Riz Ahmed’s Left Handed Films and Pillars Fund inaugural fellowship) examining the pressures that surround young Muslim men today. It was developed and directed by John Hoggarth, The North Wall’s Co-Director, as part of the venue’s ArtsLab programme, which supports artists at the beginning of their careers. John comments, “I love plays that take us by surprise and challenge our assumptions. I was immediately drawn to this ‘rites of passage’ story about two best friends, Mohsen and Kash - growing up, fitting in and striking out. As a writer who grew up in Oxford, Karim has crafted a story that places the action in a community he knows well and gives a voice to residents of our city who rarely represented on stage.”
