Wartime letters from a mother to her son 1943-1945 Edited by Katie Oakley

This is a new book edited by Katie Oakley, the daughter of OSE John Henry Oakley (Mac’s, 1932-35). Katie collected all the correspondence that her father received duringWW2 from his mother Ruby Janet Oakley, known to all as 'La', when he was serving with the Reconnaissance Corps in North Africa, Greece and Italy. Whilst many letters written by soldiers have survived, this volume is unusual as the letters are from a mother in London to her son fighting in the war. This is one woman's vivid description of running a house and supporting her family amidst flying bombs, food shortages and the constant worry about her son who is fighting on the front line.

Brisbane, Australia. Hugo is the grandson of Hugh Rose (SCR, 1989-1990). Hugo is an adorable, inquisitive little boy with a liking for Audis, golf and going to the beach (like his Daddy). At the moment he goes nowhere without his Ellie Elephant. Saxon looks forward to Hugo possibly doing a gap year over at Teddies before university!

Christmas Eve at King’s: 100 Years of Nine Lessons and Carols

By Timothy Rogers (Cowell’s, 1975-1980)

For this fascinating book, the author has delved into the archives in Cambridge to produce a complete record of the music that has been used in the world-famous Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King’s over the last 100 years. Listing all of the Christmas pieces, he can reveal the most-performed carol from the Festivals since 1918.

The book describes a scheme, devised by Boris Ord, for performing the hymn 'Once in Royal David’s City', and it identifies the keys that he used for certain carols to make them sound brighter. There are also accounts of comments made by Sir DavidWillcocks, giving his ideas for refining the service. The author remembers the composers that Sir Philip Ledger introduced into the Festivals, as well as highlighting popular carols from Sir Stephen Cleobury’s era. About the Author Timothy Rogers studied music at Cardiff University. Since then, he has worked as a composer and followed a career in publishing. In 1987, he became one of the youngest composers in the Carols for Choirs series, edited by Sir David Willcocks and John Rutter. His choral music has been performed by the choirs of Chelmsford, Coventry, Ely, Gloucester, Norwich and Portsmouth Cathedrals, while his organ music has been played in venues including Exeter and St Paul’s Cathedrals andYork Minster, and broadcast on BBC radio. In 1992, he founded his own music business, Encore Publications. The catalogue includes choral music by Sir Stephen Cleobury and Sir Philip Ledger, as well as hymn arrangements which have featured in three royal weddings and the funeral of HRHThe Prince Philip, and the state funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
