ON TOUR

OSE EVENTS

bristol 3RD MARCH 2023

T he Beyond Teddies team travelled west in March this year to Bristol, to see some local OSE as well as recent leavers currently studying in the city.We all headed to The Florist in the city centre, and enjoyed catching up over fantastic food. The kebabs and cookie dough desserts were particular hits! We are already looking forward to visiting Exeter in early 2024 on our ‘Rhubarb on Tour’ list, so keep an eye out for your chance to catch up with other OSE over some supper!

I t has become normal for the South Wales OSE lunches to be select affairs, and so it was for the gathering on the 4th March 2023, at the Cardiff and County Club when the President, five OSE, two wives and one ex-SCR enjoyed a splendid lunch. Stories dredged from 70 years ago predominated.Tales of life under Wardens Kendall and Fisher came to the fore, and the early days of the South Wales OSE dinners were recalled. The genesis of the tie which replaced the black one which was the vogue then was recounted (because of a personal involvement, this account does tend to be repeated at these lunches); the beans of the schooling of the President were spilt by one of our number who was in the know; and the abundance of Welsh names at the School in those days was commented upon (maybe not that many Jones, but was there not a Davies XII?). The convivial lunch and entertaining conversation continued into mid-afternoon. Standing: Philip Thomas, Edward Harris, David Smart, Graeme Morgan, Claude Evans. Seated: Liz Morgan, Anthony Ernest, Richard Jones, Ros Harris . David Smart gave a brief and interesting resumé of the School as it is and the plans for the future. It was pleasing for us long-term OSE to know that we had not sullied the School’s reputation and that demand for places exceeds capacity. It continues to surprise our generation that facilities at Teddies have been so successfully both improved and grown to support an increasing number of pupils. Those who attended were: David Smart (President, Field House 1968-1972), Claude Evans (ex-SCR), Philip Thomas (Segar’s, 1954-1959), Anthony Ernest (Sing’s, 1950-1954), Richard Jones (Cowell’s, 1959-1964), Edward (Apsley, 1954-1959) and Ros Harris, and Graeme Morgan (Segar’s, 1953-1958) and Liz Morgan. It is a pity that those OSE at universities around Cardiff are not drawn to our biennial lunches. The Cardiff and County Club may ban jeans and trainers but, if more formal attire can be found, an open-arms welcome will definitely be accorded.

Attendees: Andrew Birnie (Tilly’s, 1981-1986), Andrew Warren (Segar’s, 1981-1986), Rupert Scrase (Sing’s, 1981-1986), Simon Goldson (Tilly’s, 1981-1986),Tim Schofield (Segar’s, 1981-1986), Fergus Flory (Field House, 2014-2019),Toby Maclachlan (Field House, 2014-2019), Gong Limsong (Tilly’s, 2015-2019), Alexander Gowans (Field House, 2015-2020), Archie Green (Field House, 2015-2020), Isabel Wates (Corfe, 2015-2020),Thibby Verdin-Mulot (Apsley, 2015-2020),Tom Leeson (Apsley, 2015-2020), Flo von Simson (Oakthorpe, 2016-2020), Harvey Machin (Field House, 2016-2021), Oscar Ross (Tilly’s, 2016-2021), Saskia van der Heiden (Avenue, 2017-2022), Emily Rowbotham (Beyond Teddies team), John Wiggins (Beyond Teddies team).
