I was fairly appalling at rugby, but my Colts C rugby team also went undefeated in 10 games, so in Fifth Form I didn’t lose an external sports fixture!

I was captain of the 1998 cricket team. The 1998 season was Jason Mill’s first as coach having taken over from Gary Palmer who latterly achieved some notoriety as Alastair Cook’s personal batting coach. Truth be told we weren’t a particularly talented side and the ability to draw timed games (as opposed to limited overs cricket) was a significant factor in maintaining our unbeaten record. In fact, the season is probably best remembered for a couple of heroic backs-to-the-wall draws as well as a dramatic victory away at Bradfield and an epic contest against a very good

Cheltenham side.We were a very good fielding side with a great team spirit. Interestingly, a reunion was arranged this summer as the coach of that side, Jason Mills (back left in the photo), was in Oxford from his usual base in New Zealand. The reunion was organised by Pete Swainson who also played in the 1998 side.

Not unbeaten ... but worthy winners!

R ight back in the Summer Term 1946, I was in the 2nd Vlll and we challenged the 1st Vlll to an unofficial race before the Marlow and Henley Regattas. The race was over a thousand metres and the 2nd Vlll won by nearly two lengths. The coaches would not allow the 2nd Vlll to change its title to 1st Vlll. At the Marlow Regatta the 2nd Vlll was beaten by Bedford
