Rhubarb Issue 12: November 2023

I played for the 2nd XV in 1971. Our last game was against the Martyrs which I recall we drew. Our last school match was against Rugby (I think) where we came from

T he 1977 Hockey XI was coached by Robert Aldred and Peter Badger. I believe it was the School’s first unbeaten season in its history. Chris Nathan wrote about it in his Sporting Teddies book. It was a great team and featured two future Oxford Blues, Simon Gill (Tilly’s, 1972-1977) and Nick Haddock (Tilly’s, 1972-1977).The 1978 side was also unbeaten against all schools only losing to a Robert Aldred XI made up of many international players.

H aving started at Teddies in 1983 as the first intake of girls into the Sixth Form, with such a small number we could not form a sports team. Fortunately, in my second year we managed to make up the first girls’ rowing four, which I captained. Training with the all the boys meant we were put to our paces and quickly became a very successful crew. I have wonderful memories of our time on the

Wins at: Heads of the River: • Hampton • Burway

• Reading • National Schools’ • Kingston

Regattas: Wallingford • Avon County • Thames Ditton • National Schools’ Walton • Reading Amateur • Marlow • Thames Valley Park.

The win at National Schools’ couldn't have been closer – a photo finish win over Abingdon by 0.47s that took several minutes to come through on the scoreboard! At the end of the regular season, we also were made to qualify for Henley Regatta. The Stewards were unhappy that Teddies was entering three crews into the Princess Elizabeth that year, probably thinking that as a Colts VIII we wouldn't qualify. We did, pretty emphatically, and so perhaps in a fit of pique, we were put on at the 08:00 early bird first day slot against a strong (I think) La Salle 1st VIII crew, over from Pennsylvania USA, who handed us the only loss of the season. I was never the keenest of rowers, but that was a great crew and an outstanding season.
