Rhubarb Issue 12: November 2023

The pairing of Robin Ellis (Segar’s, 1964-1969) and Peter Hughes (Segar’s, 1973-1978), who used to play as a pair at Frilford a few seasons ago, led the team off the 1st. An arrow-straight drive from Andrew Jackson (Field House, 1998-2000) set the tone for the pair. Ellis holed a 3 footer on the 18th to complete a round with a very respectable 30 scratch Stableford points. Kerr Drummond (Segar’s, 1998-2003) and Alex Holding (Field House, 2012-2017), who played as a pair the previous year, were second off and recorded 23 Stableford points. With 53 points secured, Peter Neal and Charlie Reid (Segar’s, 1973-1978) needed 25 points to secure qualification. A small but intensely interested crowd assembled around the 18th green to watch the final pair. Reid played a high quality 6 iron to the centre of the 18th green much to the crowd's pleasure. 2 putts followed and 26 points were secured to make a total of 79 points for the team – a qualification place had been secured! Congratulations to the team for securing 3rd place in qualification – Berkhampstead, Malvern and Bradfield were the other qualifiers.

GRAFTON MORRISH GOLF QUALIFIER AT DENHAM GOLF CLUB

21st May 2023

MARTYRS

A s the Grafton Morrish team arrived at Denham Golf Club, thoughts turned to their qualification attempt last year where they missed out by 1 stroke.Would the team be able to go one better this year and secure a spot in the Finals at Hunstanton and Brancaster? Denham was in excellent condition with the greens the best I have seen them. The course was firm underfoot following a dry April/May and there was a 1-2 club wind. The course had also benefited from a bunker upgrade programme ensuring a test for the golfers but also an improved visual appearance, with some holes looking more akin to those found on the European tour!
