Rhubarb Issue 12: November 2023

MARTYRS HOCKEY MARTYRSv s SHERBORNE 19th February 2023 T he Martyrs hockey side took on Sherborne in Battersea Park on Sunday 19th February. The two well-matched teams shared a fair amount of possession in the early stages of the game with several chances for both sides. As the game progressed, both teams started to find their feet and the Martyrs began to string together some passes with the likes of Ali Precious and Al Hargreaves running the midfield.Teddies were rewarded for their good play with a goal to open the scoring, making it 1-0. Sherborne replied well and took full advantage of some tired legs as we entered the second half and quickly knocked in two goals to take the lead. A fantastic team goal, calmly finished by Ruairi Willis, allowed the Martyrs to draw level at 2-2 towards the end of the game. In the very last moments Teddies broke away and had one final counter-attack chance. A great bit of build-up play from the Martyrs and an aerial ball over the top, found Harry Keen near the top of the opposition ‘D’ and allowed the Martyrs to score MARTYRS FOOTBALL MARTYRSv s RADLEY 4th February 2023 T he Martyrs once again challenged for the ‘Bar Med Cup’ in February this year in West London. 90% of the team had not kicked a ball since the last game and fitness had certainly not improved. The OSE team had their work cut out. 3-4 down in the series over the last seven years, this was an opportunity for Ben Riley’s depleted Martyrs team to level things up. Missing star goalkeeper Nick Gleave and battling centre-back Marc Perry, the game started and Radley quickly went 1-0 up. However heads did not drop. Some battling midfield work from Nick Roblin and Adam Reeve slowed the pace of the game and let the OSE team get on the ball. Some exciting passages of play started by William Canard-Power and Tom Allen provided John Barrett with some solid chances, but they were sadly not converted. Following a good phase by the Martyrs, Radley stole a chance against the run of play and the score was 2-0. An unfortunate own goal from Georges Haines. Stress levels then increased as Georges Haines had to hobble off and Nicholas Palmer had to leave early to head to a Tatler Little Black Book event (that started at 8pm).The Martyrs looked to their bench for support and to the rescue came Jonathan Skull, Jack Teasdale and Huw Trythall, slotting in immaculately as ever at right-back.

the winner with only seconds remaining! The final score was 3-2 to the Martyrs and was celebrated with a beer in the local pub afterwards! A massive thank you to Sherborne for a great game of enjoyable hockey.

Players: Peter Pitt-Brown (Mac’s, 1960-1965), Harry McHugh (Apsley, 2004-2009), Fred Simon (Tilly’s, 2008-2013), Harry Keen (Field House, 2009-2014),Al Hargreaves (Field House, 2008-2013),Will Kerr Dineen (Segar’s, 2003-2008), Ruairi Willis (Tilly’s, 2008-2013), Gus Knott (Kendall, 2010-2015), Ali Precious (Field House, 2004-2009), Luke Brennan (Field House, 2004-2009), Charlie Shipperley (Kendall, 2010-2015), Calvin Dickinson (Field House, 2010-2015). However they couldn’t stop Radley scoring again to make it 3-0. After half time Adam Reeve went into goal (and was excellent) and Leo Russell went up into midfield with the ever-aggressive Tom MacDonald. This was the change the OSE team needed and it was 3-1 after a goal from John Barrett. Quickly after this Martin Cheetham stepped up with a great finish. 3-2, game on! Unfortunately Radley scored a fourth goal towards the end of the game. It was a valiant effort all round. Special mention to Leo Russell for stepping in to play in goal. Bring on 2024 and a chance to claw a victory back in the series!
