MARTYRS CRICKET CRICKETER CUP, ROUND 1 12th June 2023 A nother high scoring affair at St Edwards! The Martyrs raced to 210-2 in just over 29 overs.Alfie Turner (Sing’s, 2020-2022) fell six short of a century and Jamie Marsh (Field House, 2016-2021) made a brilliant 89* before a declaration was made to ensure the match was complete with intermittent weather threatening North Oxford.

MARTYRS

Report by Ruairi Willis (Tilly’s, 2008-2013).

I n a well-contested match on Upper 1, the Martyrs were beaten in a close game by the IZ Australia, as part of their 13-match tour to England and Ireland. Standout bowlers for the Martyrs were Charlie Sutton (Field House, 1997-2002) and Ollie Martin (Field House, 1993-1998) with two wickets apiece – the former bowled with athleticism and fire, the latter with neither, but somehow both ended with the same result! Tom Newell (Segar’s, 1997-2002) also bowled well with little luck. Batting, John Barrett (Apsley, 2000-2005) got the Martyrs off to a rollicking start, however an attacking 50 by Peter Swainson (Tilly’s, 1995-2000) coming in at 7 was the innings highlight - a fitting goodbye (or sawasdee ka) – as he leaves the Teddies teaching staff and heads off to Harrow, Bangkok. ZINGARI AUSTRALIAVs ST EDWARD’S MARTYRS IZA 6 220 for 6 (40 overs) defeated St Edward’s Martyrs 201 all out. 2nd July 2023

NEW PRESIDENT FORTHE MARTYRS CRICKET CLUB A fter a successful 11 years, Gideon Hudson (Sing’s, 1958-1963) stepped down as President of the Martyrs Cricket Club in June this year.

Gideon was a true sportsman throughout his time at School and he continued his passion for Teddies sport through the Martyrs. Gideon began his tenure in 2012, taking over from the late John Woodcock (Sing’s, 1940-1945) and we are extremely grateful for his wonderful support of the Club. As he stepped down from his role, he said:‘I’m a bit too old and out of touch, in any case, I could never match John Woodcock’s 33-year term as President – 1969-2012!’ However, we look forward to welcoming Gideon to many more cricketing fixtures.

In keeping with the traditions of the MCC, Gideon recommended his successor and Julian Lawton-Smith (Mac’s, 1967-1971) took over in June 2023. Julian has a fine record of performance for the Martyrs Cricket Club and his nomination was fully ratified by the Martyrs Committee.
