may just have taken off our jackets and ties. We also had built interval training into our training programme, which was an initiative started by the Germans who had just won at the Olympics. We were reasonably confident of our chances coming into Henley week as we’d won the Sandeman Trophy at Reading Regatta that

T here was always a hope at the beginning of the season that the St Edward’s 1st VIII could go one better than the previous year when we had got to the semi-final of the PE. John Vernon was now our coach and built on the excellent groundwork Maitland Emmett had overseen on the coaching front for so long. We didn’t have use of a gym, rather we started a training regime which included circuit training in the Quad at break times. I don’t remember us having the time to go back to our houses to change into PE kit, we

summer. We were billeted at a town house down the hill in Henley rented by the School and stayed there for the week before the Regatta and the Regatta week itself. We ate

all our meals at Phyllis Court.
