his year we have celebrated 100 years of boarding houses at Teddies.

“Gradually the arrangements were formalized and the homes turned into Houses, which divided large numbers of boys into manageable units.The arrangement also advanced the ethos of competition and group loyalty. In many schools Housemasters ran their Houses with a large degree of autonomy, charging their pupils for the costs and collecting the income. In effect the Housemasters were barons running fiefdoms under the master-king, who would hesitate before confronting them.” (Malcolm Oxley, A New History of St Edward’s School, Oxford, 1863-2013 ). Here we look back at some of our favourite photos from the archive.

Until 1925 the School had organised pupils in Tutorial Sets A-F, so that each pupil had a consistent mentor during his time at school.When Henry Kendall arrived as Warden from Shrewsbury School in 1925, he successfully rolled out a new boarding house system creating new Houses that still exist today.
