The Memoirs and Letters of Richard Laird

Edited by Rory Laird (Segar’s, 1961-1965)

ABOUTTHE AUTHOR

Rory Laird attended St Edward’s from 1961 to 1965,

“My biggest aspiration for the book is that it captures not only the life and times of Seve, but his unique charisma and spirit … his pride and passion,” said David, who tells the story of how he captured images of Seve celebrating a birdie on the 18th green at St Andrews in 1984 to win his second Open title.

before going on to serve in the Royal Navy for 35 years. As a recent retirement project, he put together this book, based on a post war memoir written by his late father, Richard Laird, and his parents’ wartime

letters. In these letters it describes their wartime experiences in the Far East, where his father was a Japanese Prisoner of War, and his mother worked for the Special Operations Executive. The review below is written by St Edward’s History Teacher, Ross Simmonds. F or those who think of the experience of prisoners of war held by the Japanese after the fall of Singapore, both fiction and non-fiction serve to reinforce the tendency to associate the time with inhumanity and the very worst kind of horror. Tales of cruelty undoubtedly feature in this edition, ably constructed by Rory Laird, of his father’s experience of Singapore and Burma in the years before and during the SecondWorldWar. Considerably more is present, however. One is treated to an evocation of the damp heat of Shanghai, a city of seemingly cheap and exciting living for colonial adventurers.Through letters published in full one witnesses the swift arrival of war and gets a view of the unappreciated stages of the SecondWorldWar : the Marco Polo Bridge incident, the bombing by the Chinese airforce in 1937 of a Japanese cruiser moored on theWhampoa and the falling of bombs on Singapore well before any fell on London or Berlin.TheWar came to the East before it came to theWest.

As well as photographs from David’s portfolio and Getty Images’ archives, the book features many of the finest action images and portraits taken of Seve during a career embracing a record 95 tournament victories around the world.

The 176-page book also contains a large collection of family images not made public before, including portraits of Seve with his three children and wearing his military service uniform. The book opens with a moving ‘Thank You’ letter
