ST EDWARD’S

SCHOOL NEWS

G SEGAR’S S egar's is very much a home away from home for me and this feeling has really solidified as we have slowly edged further away from Covid regulations. Seeing the House operating at full capacity again was wonderful to watch and such fun to be a part of, especially in the Summer Term when there is a buzz in the air as we count down to Gaudy and the summer antics begin. Going out in the evening and playing golf or football has dominated the after-school life for some, whereas others in House find themselves leaning more towards the music school or the dance studio. Sport does not only take place on Field Side as Segar’s yard cricket has once again become a very popular pastime. It is a local game with its own unique set of rules: beware the straight six towards the new Christie Centre! There has been lots of interaction with other Houses, a new liberty of the more relaxed Covid rules; we have done a number of socials with Oakthorpe outside using our fire pit and the outdoor pizza oven. I am really looking forward to what the boys in House can achieve next year as the regulations fully relax and the mighty Segar’s can once again prosper in the interhouse competitions.

B boys, the prospect of girls coming into Sing’s was unexpected and unfamiliar ; similarly, for the girls, the original thought of joining an all-boy’s House as a small minority was daunting and slightly nerve-racking. However, this instantly changed as the girls arrived in September and quickly settled in and became an important part of the Sing’s environment. Boarding in Sing’s has inevitably changed over the last couple of years, and for the better. Sing’s has used the lockdowns as an opportunity to modernise its building and the mindset of the pupils. Due to the need to have House bubbles, the boys and girls in House integrated and have become closer than ever before. In call over, our Housemaster, Dr Burbidge, will inform us of the activities and important notices of the day ahead and often throw a joke at one of the half-asleep Shells. As a House we take part in many events and demonstrate our vast array of talents, in sport, music, Shell plays and debating. We host many of our own events such as barbecues, dinners and ping-pong tournaments, and we play outside on the fields. We look forward to meeting the new members of Sing’s in September and having a successful year. sing’s S ing’s is an energetic, sporty, artistic and passionate House. Recently there has been a rapid growth of our community and the spirit within it, inclusion between year groups has never been stronger. The bond between pupils and staff is strong and this relationship allows pupils to be more open and feel comfortable within the House, promoting the feeling of it being a second family.
