John O’Hara (Kendall, 2006-2011) went on to complete DofE canoeing expeditions with Tony but also was part of the 2007 Skiffex . He recalls: ‘ A friend of Tony’s with whom we camped the first night had canoes and a coracle which we messed around with before making fishing rods.Tony wisely advised against eating for dinner the one perch we caught. These and other experiences have given me a lifelong love of water sports and canoeing for which I am very grateful.’

What remains to be mentioned is Tony’s compassion, which was brought to the fore on the death of Fourth Form coxswain, Jack Dyson (Kendall, 1999- 2004) one of Tony’s protégés. Jack’s mother Diane sums up perfectly this wonderful man who has had far bigger impact than he might imagine on the lives of so many: ‘He is a gentle
