performances from Josh Brangan (Captain of Boats) and Isaac Hillicks-Tulip meant that they were invited to the December camp. We constantly remind our senior rowers that if they are looking to perform at a high level then organisation and dedication are key to success. It is important they find a healthy balance between being a teenager, a pupil and an athlete; none of which come easy and to combine them is even harder! A student-athlete is something that we talk with the rowers about and with many of our Upper Sixth in the process of applying to universities, it was with great pride that SESBC could celebrate Josh Brangan’s offer of

a rowing scholarship to Harvard University. This is a fantastic achievement and we wish all the Upper Sixth the best of luck and lend our support as they continue to try to find the balance of a student-athlete. Towards the end of the Autumn Term, we finished with the girls’ and boys’ senior 8’s placing second at Wallingford Head. This was quickly followed by the main event of the year – the SESBC Christmas races! We hold a final time trial with all year groups mixing together and a winter BBQ as a reward for the efforts made throughout the term. As pupils left school for the Christmas holiday, the senior rowers had planned to

be on a training camp in Spain but with the restrictions understandably tight it was decided that it would be prudent to stay in the UK. The National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham was the alternative venue and we were assured of a similar environment to that of Seville! 29 students attended and the senior boys and girls ended the term in a strong place and with plenty to be excited about. The Spring Term has seen the Boat Club welcome ever more pupils to the river and with internal time trials, private fixtures, and formal racing we are working towards the Schools’ Head of the River and The Scullery due to be held as we went to press.
