36 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE
Blue and Yellow Make Green By Charlotte Schofield, Teacher in charge of the Eco Society In August 2021, the UK’s Chief Scientific Advisor Sir Patrick Vallance stated: ‘The IPCC report is clear: nothing short of transforming society will avert catastrophe. Achieving net zero will require action from everyone’. As a school we have a particular responsibility to ensure the Earth remains habitable for our pupils and generations to come. To this end, the Warden has established a Sustainability Committee, which he chairs. It is made up of a staff group and a group of pupil representatives from each House, plus the two sustainability Prefects, Lara Brech and Keegan Boyd. The two groups meet both separately and together. The staff group includes the Chair of Governors, the Bursar and Estates Bursar, three teachers and staff from other school departments. A whole-school carbon audit is underway and, based on its findings, the Governors will draw up a Sustainability Policy for the School and agree on a carbon reduction target and time frame by the end of this academic year.
